Bone Grafting

Fort McMurray Family Dentists

Franklin Dental wants to give you a healthy, beautiful smile by providing cosmetically pleasing dental procedures. These processes prevent further damage happening to your gums and teeth, even your bones and jaw.

Do you have missing teeth? It is very important to fix this issue as it can lead to bone loss in your jaw. Let our team at Franklin Dental Centre prevent bone loss from happening. Come in to have your jaw inspected before your gum tissue decreases to reduce the chance of losing teeth. Your facial structure can change with the loss of teeth, altering the distance between your nose and chin which can shorten over time.

To stimulate new bone growth at missing tooth sites we offer bone grafting treatments.

Aftercare Instructions
It is important you follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentists. Whether you were put to sleep for this procedure or were only given local anesthesia, the post-operative instructions remain the same. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 780-790-0088.

Options For

Your Dental Bone Graft

There are many materials available for bone grafting but your dentist will always choose the best option for your personal needs. The material used during the process will eventually be replaced by your own naturally occurring bone growth.

There are 4 types of bone grafting we can use.. We will determine the best option for you based on an evaluation of your medical history, benefits and risks of surgery, and your bone loss.

Material Used
For Bone Grafts

Bone grafting material can be from several different sources. Bone can come from somewhere in your own body but often comes from either an animal or human donor and has been specially sterilized, making it safe. There are also synthetic options for bone grafting.

A common procedure is to insert bone grafting material into a socket where a tooth has been extracted. This allows for bone regeneration giving your jaw strength to have an implant.
Our team at Franklin Dental will discuss all the options with you when you come in for a bone grafting assessment.

What To Expect After Surgery

Bone grafting can often be done under local anaesthesia. Since there may be a small incision in your gums to insert bone grafting material you may experience some tenderness in the area. Should you require something for the pain we usually recommend an anti-inflammatory to sooth your discomfort.

Depending on the type of bone grafting procedure performed, you may require a few weeks to a few months healing time.

After surgery, you may have skin or gum swelling. You can even have bruising and minor bleeding. To avoid major pain and issues, we help your healing process by placing you on a soft foods diet. In order to heal you need to floss, brush and rinse your mouth 2-3 times a day with non-alcoholic mouthwash. We want you to ask us questions, after all, that’s what we are here for.

Ask your dentist about implant tools that will help you get into where your toothbrush or floss is unable to. Come visit us every 6 months so we can monitor your healing and make sure everything is moving along as it should.
