3 Types of Restorative Dental Services In Fort McMurray

Restorative dentistry is often confused with cosmetic dental services, but there are key differences between the two dental approaches. Simply put, cosmetic dentistry is primarily focused on aesthetics while restorative dentistry is essential for maintaining a healthy set of teeth and gums.

If you have missing teeth or if your dentist has recommended removing teeth to prevent further problems, hope is not lost. Innovation in the dental industry has provided the opportunity for patients to not only restore their teeth but achieve the smile they’ve always wanted - regardless of your dental history!

Here are 3 different types of restorative dental services available to you.

Dental Implants

Dental implants offer one of the strongest tooth restoration options that have the ability to restore the look and function of your natural teeth. A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium that is surgically placed into your jawbone, acting as anchors for the replacement tooth (also known as a crown) to be secured in place.

Dental implant surgery happens in stages and takes a few months to complete, depending on the patient’s individual treatment plan. Typically, you would need a healthy amount of jawbone to be a candidate for the procedure - however, bone grafting can also be done which makes the surgery more extensive but is well worth it for the results.

Some of the benefits of dental implants include:

  • Improved appearance of the facial structure
  • Prevents progression of bone loss
  • Improved ability to chew
  • A strong set of teeth that can last for over 10 years when cared for properly

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or in spaces to fill the gap. Crowns protect existing teeth that have been weakened due to decay, fractures, or trauma. They can also be used for cosmetic purposes to cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth.

Bridges on the other hand are meant to fill in space where teeth have been lost. It’s important to fill in missing teeth as, over time, the surrounding existing teeth can shift and cause other dental problems.

Dentures are a common and well-known restorative procedure that can replace all of your teeth on the top and bottom gum lines. In the past, dentures only came in one version - the type that is removed at the end of the day and placed in a cup with a cleaning solution.

Today, dentures can be:

  • Partial - To replace only a few missing teeth.
  • Full/Complete - To replace all teeth on the top and bottom gum lines.
  • Fixed/Permanent - Dentures that are supported by dental implants, a more cost-effective tooth restoration option than single implants and crowns.
  • Overdenture - Fitted over the roots of natural teeth or a set of dental implants that are easily removable.

Restoring a full smile can be achieved with the above restorative dental options. Contact your local Fort McMurray dentist for a consultation and we’ll help you find a solution that’s right for you.
