Damaged Teeth? Talk to Your Dentist About These Two Simple Procedures

Do you have any missing, chipped, or cracked teeth? If so, try not to worry too much because you’re in good company. Many people, unfortunately, struggle with this problem. But just like anything else, there’s always a solution if you’re willing to look for one.

And at Franklin Dental Centre in Fort McMurray, we offer that solution in the form of the restorative dentistry services you need to revitalize your smile.

But you may be wondering how we go about doing that; what procedures, methods, or processes do we follow to restore your pearly whites?

We’d like to introduce you to…

Crown and Bridge Dental Services in Fort McMurray

Dental crowns and bridges are nothing more than artificial devices. In layman’s terms, they’re false teeth. However, it’s important to note that they’re not the same as dentures. Dentures can be removed at will, day or night, whereas crowns and bridges are fastened and secured in place – firmly attached to your current set of teeth.

For this reason, they can only be added or removed by the dexterous hands of a qualified dental professional.

Dental Crowns and Bridges: What’s the Difference?

Even though they both technically perform the same function, there are some slight differences between dental crowns and bridges that are important for you to know.

Let’s explore the distinct traits that separate these two dental devices.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is applied to a single broken, chipped, or otherwise damaged tooth. Other than bolstering the tooth’s structural integrity, a crown also refines the tooth’s appearance, position, and symmetry. Additionally, a crown can also be used as a cap on an implant to offer a more natural shape; thereby, enhancing its performance.

Typically, crowns are produced using porcelain or ceramic materials; although they can also be made from materials such as acrylic, alloy, or even gold.

Dental Bridges

Unlike a dental crown that only covers a single tooth, a dental bridge is used as a connector for multiple missing teeth in a row. The utility of a dental bridge is paramount. The reason being is that when a gap is present due to several missing teeth, it can actually result in the existing teeth shifting and revolving into the vacant spots.

This type of dental disparity can cause biting issues, periodontal diseases (gum disease), or possibly even TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. Bridges are utilized to restore a set of missing teeth, however, they can also be used to replace a single tooth as well.

They are attached to the existing teeth that “neighbour” the unoccupied space within the mouth. Also referred to as abutments, these “neighbouring” teeth act as anchor points for the dental bridge to latch onto.
