Crowns & Bridges

Fort McMurray Family Dentists

By examining your teeth, your dentist can let you know if a crown or bridge is needed. Crowns and bridges protect your teeth from further harm. These prosthetic dental devices are cemented on your existing teeth or in spaces where your original teeth once were.

Make sure you return for regular cleanings so we can keep your gums and teeth in wonderful shape.

Aftercare Instructions
After your dental bridge or crown is placed you may feel slight pressure for a few days. It is important you follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 780-790-0088.

Dental Crowns

Dental Services

When your tooth is damaged or in need of a large filling but there is not enough tooth left, we provide you with a hollow artificial tooth called a crown. Crowns protect your weak tooth from fractures, cover your root canals, blanket dental implants, add natural colour to your discoloured or poorly shaped tooth, and attach to a bridge. A cap is another term for a crown; they can last up to 10 years or longer.

Crown Styles

Metal

● Made of gold
● Long lasting without chippage or breaking
● Wears down opposing teeth

Porcelain

● Most natural looking
● More brittle than composite or metal and can chip easier

Composite

● Natural look
● Chips less easily than porcelain but chewing causes it to wear down quickly
● Easily stained with brushing because this removes the highly polished surface

Porcelain Fused to Metal

● Looks natural
● Stronger than composite or porcelain
● Less likely to chip compared to ceramic or porcelain
● Metal might show if your gums shrink or are thin

A fixed bridge, or bridge is a hollow artificial tooth that covers your natural tooth or dental implant. A bridge is used when you have teeth or a single tooth missing. We cement a bridge to your natural teeth or implants adjacent to the empty space.

As with crowns, bridges come in several options. We will let you know which is the optimum one for you.

Types of Bridges

Traditional

A traditional bridge is used if you have natural teeth on either side of the gap where you are missing your teeth. Each side of your missing teeth is prepped for crowns.

Implant

If there is not enough healthy teeth or teeth in general to support a bridge, or several/all teeth are missing then an implant is used. We anchor an implant to your existing dental implants and surgically place it into your jawbone.

Custom Made

Custom made bridges are custom formed and anchored to your dental implants.

Resin-Bonded or Maryland

If your teeth are missing in the front of your mouth, we use this kind of bridge to fuse your artificial teeth to metal bonds and cement them to the back of your natural teeth.
Make sure you return for regular cleanings so we can keep your gums and teeth in wonderful shape.

What Happens? When You Get a Bridge

Franklin Dental will prepare your teeth for a bridge by examining the health of your teeth. Then a bridge will be constructed from a mold that is taken during the examination. A temporary bridge will be put in place while the permanent one is being custom made. Once your bridge is ready, we will attach it during a follow up appointment.

Crowns and bridges can come loose or fall out so it is crucial that you take great care of them just as you would with regular teeth. Brush your crown or bridge with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and floss daily then come back to Franklin Dental so we can check in and check up on the work that we performed.
