Orthodontics and Functional Orthopedics

Orthodontics & Functional Orthopedics

Fort McMurray Family Dentists

The difference between orthodontics and orthopedics is that orthopedics assists with favourable facial growth and structure of the jaw. Functional orthopedics helps our younger patients with conditions caused by such things as mouth breathing, poor tongue positioning, and allergies. At an early stage we can correct these problems by using specialized orthopedic treatments.

Orthodontics includes services such as retainers and braces that help the alignment of your teeth and jaw, correcting any irregularities. We will ask questions about your health to prepare you for the specialized orthodontic treatments. It is necessary to visit the dentist to complete a full examination, teeth impressions and x-rays of your mouth and head, prior to any orthodontic work.

We will ask questions about your health to prepare you for the specialized orthodontic treatments.

With Franklin Dental

Depending on your situation, we may provide you braces with wires, bands or other fixed and removable corrective appliances. Braces apply continuous pressure that slowly moves your teeth in the correct direction. Your bone changes shape as your teeth move as this pressure is applied.

Components of Braces

Brackets: Small squares bonded to the front of each tooth with a special dental bonding agent or orthodontic bands. The brackets hold the arch wires that move your teeth.
Orthodontic Bands: Providing an anchor for the brackets, they wrap around each tooth. You may solely be fitted with brackets or bands.
Spacers: Create a small space before the placement of bands by acting as separators that fit between your teeth.
Arch wires: Wires that attach to the brackets guiding the movement of your teeth.
Ties: Small rubber rings or thin wires fastening the arch wire to the brackets.
Buccal Tube: Holds the end of the arch wire in place.
Ligatures or Small Elastic Bands: Hold the arch wires to the brackets.
Springs: Springs can be placed on the arch wires between the brackets to pull, open, push or close spaces between your teeth.
*Note that headgear tubes might be placed by us on your upper teeth holding this and the face-bow (device that moves your upper molars back in your mouth, correcting bite discrepancies and creating space for crowded teeth) in place.

Elastics or Rubber Bands: Attach to hooks on brackets and are worn in different ways between your upper and lower teeth. They apply pressure moving upper and lower teeth together so we can achieve the perfect fit for your individual teeth.

There are newer mini braces we offer as an option to the regular ones. These braces are smaller and we may recommend them after determining your individual needs.

Invisalign® is a type of invisible braces we offer here at Franklin Dental. This is a great option for those that have a less severe teeth crowding because they are made of clear plastic that can be removed. These create a discreet look while effectively treating the areas in your mouth for proper alignment.
Do You Have More Questions? Your dentist can’t wait to answer them for you so that you can attain a confident dental future. We will be sure to put a smile on your face so reach out to us to avoid furthering issues you may have.

What To Know About Retainers

Retainers often come after braces to maintain the beautiful straight line of teeth braces have created. We will let you know how long to wear your retainer for in order to avoid the shifting of teeth once your braces have been removed. Retainers have added benefits such as improving your speech since they help adjust your tongue placement to form sounds correctly.

Functional Orthopedics comes in two forms, one being the use of removable appliances that work with specific muscle forces to move your teeth. Sometimes you may only require functional orthopedic therapy, the other form of functional orthopedic treatment. In this therapy an orthopedic physical therapist that will use exercise, heat, ice, electrical stimulation or ultrasound techniques to help those painful joints of yours move better.
