Children's Dental

Fort McMurray Family Dentists

Do you have questions for the dentist about the proper treatment for your child’s teeth? Franklin Dental professionals are skilled in children’s dentistry and want to make sure they get the proper treatment for their age. It is vital to start an oral health routine for your child as a baby and continue throughout their life.

You can use a soft baby brush or damp cloth on your baby’s gums and teeth, wrapping your finger around the cloth for a good grasp while still being gentle on their mouth. You will need to brush your little one’s teeth for them, typically until they are 3 years old then aid their tooth brushing from age 3 and up. Your child can likely start brushing their own teeth when they turn 8 years old or perhaps sooner with a quick check on them after they finish the job.

Start cleaning your child’s mouth before their teeth arrive.

How Do I Brush

My Child's Teeth?

By laying your baby on their back in a position that is comfortable for them, you can easily see inside their mouth. Avoid using toothpaste on your young one until their teeth develop. By holding their head at a 45-degree angle it is easy for you to aim where the gums meet teeth to clean in soft circles.

If your child is 3 years old or younger and we see tooth decay or risk of this kind then we may recommend the use of a fluoride toothpaste but you should only use it in very small amounts about the size of grain of rice. Avoid the use of fluoride on your child at this age if there are no signs of decay. It is best to use only water at a young age. If you have a child 3-6 years old then a pea size portion of fluoride toothpaste should be utilized. As a parent, please ensure your child spits out all of the toothpaste from their mouth and gives a good rinse.

How Do I Floss
My Child's Teeth?

To floss your child’s teeth, you should wrap a length of floss that measures the length of your child’s arm around each of your middle fingers. Make sure you leave 2 inches between your hands and use your index finger to guide the floss in a C shape around the base of the tooth where it attaches to the gums. Continue this process, wiping your child’s tooth from bottom to top 2-3 times or more until their teeth are clean. Remember to floss the backs of the last molars and use a new portion of the floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
It is critical for children to brush their teeth right before bedtime because they do not produce as much saliva as adults while asleep and saliva keeps our mouths clean.

Keys To Good Health

Germs build up in a toothbrush as time continues on so it is important to get a new toothbrush every 3-4 months to keep your child’s mouth in excellent oral health. We will provide your child with floss and a toothbrush when they visit us so they can keep those little teeth clean before their next dentist appointment. Other keys to oral hygiene are healthy eating, limiting drinks with high amounts of sugar and snacking. It is best to keep snacking down to 2-3 times per day to avoid cavities and further issues.
