Everything You Need to Know About Oral Surgery

Published on: December 4th, 2019

It’s almost time for your oral surgery appointment at the dentist.

Oral surgery? Why do you need this?

You might have impacted wisdom teeth and need to get them removed. Perhaps you are getting dental implants or need your jaw and teeth repaired due to an injury. These are some reasons you may need an oral surgeon but there are many more. Your dentist will let you know if oral surgery is necessary.

How do you prepare for your oral surgery booking?

Dress for Your Surgery

Take time to think about what you want to wear on the day of your oral surgery. You will want to wear something that you are comfortable in so once the surgery is complete, you don’t have to struggle with a multitude of buttons or restrictive clothing. After your surgery, you will be resting at home, probably sleeping so being comfy from the get-go is a huge benefit. Wear something to the dentist that you are ok with getting a bit dirty in case any blood gets on you during the procedure though this will try and be avoided.

If you are getting an IV sedation during your treatment, you will want to wear something that allows the sedation specialist to easily insert the IV. A short-sleeved top is a good option as it exposes a visible area for inserting the IV into your arm.

Avoid Eating and Drinking

Your oral surgeon may ask you to avoid drinking and eating before the surgery. You will likely need to refrain from eating at least 8 hours before the surgery and halt drinking at least 12 hours before. If there is something you are craving, bite into it because when you are getting close to surgery day and for a while after, you will be on a strict soft foods diet. This strict dietary measure is necessary for sedation to work properly and healing to be on track.

Be Informed

Make sure you know what is about to happen during your oral surgery, so you know all the risks and advantages involved. If you have any questions that pop up after you have agreed to your surgery, don’t worry, you can ask the dentist these questions at any time before or post-treatment. Your oral surgeon will explain everything you need to know before the day of your dental surgery but be sure to ask to make extra sure you are fully prepared for your appointment.

When You Need to Cancel Oral Surgery

Cold/Flu

You might want to cancel and reschedule your appointment if you are feeling sick or coughing a lot. Not feeling well can make your dentist appointment tricky, causing the dentist to find it difficult to work on your teeth as you cough and sneeze your way through the treatment.

Now you have it, the information needed for your oral surgery appointment. Oral surgery is nothing to be afraid of because your dentist at Fort McMurray will help you at every step. Keep a positive, healthy dental future free of pain by visiting your dentist often.
