Mouth Guards

Fort McMurray Family Dentists

We can help protect your teeth and gums from damage by fitting you with a mouth guard. Mouth guards secure your gums and teeth in place and can prevent dislocation of your jaw. They fit over your teeth and gum surface, usually over your teeth on the top, but we have mouth guards for your bottom teeth as well. These rubber like covers cushion your teeth and gums in everyday life whether you grind your teeth, need dental protection or play sports.

Our team at Franklin Dental Centre offers a new option in athletic mouthwear that is scientifically proven to enhance your concentration while increasing strength and speed, perfect for the athlete in you that plays contact sports.

What is this mouthwear, you ask? The mouthwear we provide is UnderArmour™ Performance Mouthwear and includes a patented Bite Tech technology relieving the pressure of the joints connecting your jawbone to the skull (temporomandibular joints) while preventing clenching of your teeth.

We can also offer an Under Armour™ Performance Mouthpiece that provides you with protection in limited to no contact sports.

The Process

For Dental Mouth Guards

Getting fit for an Under Armour™ mouth protection is quick and painless. We take an impression of your top and bottom teeth ensuring we get a bite impression as well. Your new mouth protection is usually ready for you within 10 days’ time.

Have some fun with your mouthwear. An addition, decals or yellow biteplates are available to give you a personalized look while still keeping that protection for your teeth and gums. Over the counter mouth guards can be purchased, but these have less comfort, fit and protection than a custom made mouth guard. If you do decide on the over the counter option, here are some choices for you.

Boil-and-Bite
Mouth Guard

This type of mouth guard comes in small, medium and large. It is sized by age and made of a thermoplastic material. Extremely hot water softens the guard or you can bite into it to make an impression of your mouth shape. They are often bulkier than a custom-made mouth guard.
Ready-Made Mouth Guards:
The ready-made mouth guard is rubber or polyvinyl material held in place by clenching your teeth together. This type of mouth guard provides you with the least amount of protection, is loose and bulky.

Cleaning Your Mouth Guard

Rinse your mouth guard under cold water before and after you use it and clean it with antiseptic mouthwash, cleaning tablets or a toothbrush about once a month. Cleaning your mouthguard is critical so that you avoid catching an oral or throat infection from it. Make sure your mouth guard is stored in a perforated plastic container away from any heat since this can deform it. Only close your container when the guard is completely dry.

If you notice holes or tears in your mouthguard then it is time to replace it. Your guard will wear down over time through pressure from your teeth and cleaning. It is best to replace your mouthguard every 2-3 years.

We want to have good protection for your teeth and this is why we suggest using a professional custom fit mouth guard.
